Can a Car Battery Replacement Fix Your Car’s Starting Issues?

No one likes to hear a cracking sound while turning the key to start a car. This sound is a signal of a fault in the car that may cause a trouble for the driver. Hence, it is essential to address this starting issue before it leads to a larger auto problem. The first thing that comes to our mind in such a situation is the replacement of the car battery. But does it really solve the starting issues of the car? Sometimes, car battery replacement is the best option to fix the starting issue if the battery is worn out or dead.

However, there may be other problems too that can be the reasons for creating a problem while starting a car. So, we need to know how to identify whether it is time to replace the car battery or address other auto issues.

Signs that show the need for a car battery replacement

Several signs while starting a car can suggest that the car battery may need replacement. The driver needs to identify the following signs and replace the battery before starting the journey in that car.

  • Slowness of the engine – The car engine takes a longer time than usual to start, which can happen due to an aged or faulty battery. The engine does not receive sufficient power from the battery, which makes it difficult for the engine to rotate while starting the car.
  • A clicking noise – If a driver hears a clicking sound repeatedly while turning the key of his/her car, it indicates a problem in the starter motor. The insufficient supply of power from the car battery is the prime reason for this unusual sound.
  • Jump start of the car – When a car needs a jump-start too frequently, it points towards an old battery that fails to perform properly. In this process, electrical energy is supplied through jumper cables to the battery to start the engine. With a fresh and healthy battery, the car never needs to undergo the jump-start process again.
  • Lights get dimmer – All the external headlights, tail lights, and all other lights fitted in a car seem to be weaker than before. As these bulbs are powered by the car battery, it can be easily assumed that the car battery needs replacement.
  • Failure of all electrical components – The audio system, navigation, air conditioner, heating system, sensors, safety features, and control units receive power from the car battery. If the battery stops working properly, all these devices also start malfunctioning. So, problems detected with these electrical systems can be linked to the weakened car battery.
  • Bulging battery case – An old car battery swells up when it is about to burst out, leading to fire. Thus, it exerts pressure on the walls of its case, pushing out the walls. Hence, when a driver notices that the battery case seems to expand beyond its normal dimensions, he/she should take it as a signal to replace the battery immediately.
  • Brief illumination of dashboard light – The dashboard warning light flashes only to signal malfunctioning of vital auto parts. Hence, repeated flashing of this light while starting a car indicates a serious problem in the car battery that demands replacement.
  • Battery emitting unpleasant odor – A dying car battery starts releasing sulfuric acid, whose smell can be easily detected by anyone riding that vehicle. This powerful acid can cause damage in other parts of the car. It may even trigger a fire in the car while driving.
  • Visible signs of damage in the battery – Old car batteries crack in several places, through which liquid can be seen oozing out. The corrosion in the battery surface is another sure sign of the battery reaching the utmost point of its life.

What other factors can cause a starting problem in a car?

Apart from an old or malfunctioning car battery, there can be several other reasons for starting problems in a car. The replacement of the battery will not solve the following issues.

  • Fault in the starter motor – If there is any problem in the starter motor of the car, replacement of the battery cannot fix the starting issues. The starter motor makes a clicking noise or remains still even after turning the key, indicating a fault in the motor of the vehicle.
  • Failure of the alternator – When a car engine is working, the battery receives charges from the alternator. If the alternator does not function properly, the battery is not charged, and the car engine cannot start smoothly. In that case, all signs of a dead battery will be seen even with a fresh car battery.
  • Defect in the electrical system – Different problems may arise in the electrical connections of a car, due to which the power of the battery fails to reach the motor of the engine. The fuse can blow off, the wiring can be faulty, or ignition switches may have issues, which should be diagnosed and repaired before starting the car. The replacement of the battery cannot solve these problems.
  • Parasitic electrical drainage – Sometimes, an electrical component of the car continues to draw power from the battery even when the car is not running. It exhausts the battery, leading to starting issues. Only expert auto technicians can identify this problem with a parasitic drain test.
  • Loose connection between battery cables – If the cables connecting the battery terminals corrode over time or are loosened, the battery fails to supply power to the starter motor. Even a new battery will have the same starting issues, which can be repaired only by auto technicians.

Conclusion

Generally, a car battery lasts for 3 – 5 years. So, it is essential to check the health of the battery and replace it after this span. Auto technicians perform a battery voltage test and a load test to check the condition of a car battery. If the battery repeatedly fails these tests, it is time to replace it. If the starting issues persist even after cleaning the battery regularly, it should be replaced. Experienced auto technicians can easily check all the related auto parts and tell whether the battery replacement is the only solution for the starting issues.
